I love to host people- it's who I am! I love having people over for dinner, hosting girls nights, and planning outings for my friend group. BUT being the broke college student that I am, this can get tricky.
Last week I decided I wanted to have a cocktail party at my house, just for fun, and challenged myself to do it all about $100. It was pretty hard and I borrowed a couple things from friends, but all in all, it worked out.
Here are a couple tips on how to plan a cocktail party on a budget:
I mostly used decor I already had in order to save money, but I did purchase a couple things. First off I wanted to keep it simple- black, with pops of gold and white. Keeping it simple also helps with the price of the party. The only things I bought were white hydrangeas ($6), black tablecloths ($5), black napkins ($2), place cards ($5) and plastic serving platters ($2 each).
Definitely the category that costed the most. It helped that Trader Joe's has a ton of easy appetizers- I got spinach pies, meatballs, flatbreads, and my cheeses from here. A tip is to ask your guests to bring a dish if they would like in order to help with the cost! My friends brought a homemade spinach ring, cupcakes, and cookies.
I was contemplating making a fun cocktail for everyone but a) I was crunched for time b) I didn't have anything to put it in c) I had to stick to my budget. I know I talk about Trader Joe's a lot but seriously its amazing and this is where I bought a giant prosecco bottle for $12 and 3 bottles of wine for $10. I asked my guests to bring their choice of drink as well if they wanted more than I could offer!
All in all it was such a fun night! I'm looking forward to hosting a lot more parties in years to come and getting more creative on the decor. Let me know what your party-planning tricks are in the comments below!
